U7. Architecture as Sustainability Basic concepts 3 pilars : socio-economicsocio-culturalenviromental 2. Healthy building Connection between human biology and theenvironment. Therefore, buildings must allow:• air quality: correct ventilation and transpiration• water quality• use of natural light• thermal comfort• noise protection 3. Climate-human being The energy and health of human being largely depend on the directeffects of the environment in which he lives. The atmospheric conditions stimulate or depress the physical and mentalwork of man (apathy, stress, grief, illness…). That conditions are at anoptimum point within a range of specific climatic conditions. The human being is a thermal machine that transforms chemical energyinto mechanical energy with great heat dispersion due to its metabolism. The main elements of the climate environment that influence humancomfort are:• the temperature of the air• the radiation (thermal emission)• the movement of the air• the relative humidityHuman comfort also depends on:• characteristics of clothing (insulation and total area)• characteristics of the type of work (metabolic thermal load) 4. Sustainable design In addition to the environmental problems, the great industrial development has led to the loss of the skills and know-how accumulated over centuries. 5. Materials Materials take an important role in sustainability, we have to take care of our planet so using less pollutive ones can help us save the planet. My group and I did a presentation of it which is mentioned in unit number 3C
